The Infamous Short Sleeve Sweatshirt

The Infamous Short Sleeve Sweatshirt

You may have seen the Short Sleeve Sweatshirt look in a few iconic films. One that immediately springs to mind is the 1976 Oscar winning classic ‘Rocky’ (included in our ‘Top 6 Boxing films you should watch’ journal).

Rocky

We trust you recognised the infamous short sleeve sweatshirt and long sleeve t-shirt combination worn by Rocky Balboa (played by Sylvester Stallone) through the majority of his training scenes.

Rocky

Not only was this a typical look for Rocky, you can see the short sleeve crew look on ‘Hilts’ (played by Steve McQueen) in the 1963 film ‘The Great Escape’. Set in a prisoner-of-war camp during World War II, the allied soldiers are determined to escape. McQueen’s typical look was a short crew neck sweatshirt, khaki chinos and a baseball mitt and ball in hand at almost all times. His look from the film became so desired that Belstaff had a launch completely dedicated to it called the ‘Steve McQueen Trial master capsule collection’. Not only Belstaff, but Persol, Baracuta and Tag Heuer were also inspired by his style.

To achieve a similar look, many recommend cutting off the sleeves of your already owned or perhaps brand-new sweatshirt… no need. For our Army Gym collection this spring/summer season, we have the ideal short sleeve sweatshirt, which is pigment dyed and has been made with 100% organic cotton in Portugal. This rare design is also complemented with a ribbed hem - a much neater look than trying to DIY with your kitchen scissors.
