Mammut and Nigel Cabourn announce their first collaboration collection. Available now on mammut.com and cabourn.jp.

We're pleased to announce a unique collaboration with renowned British designer and heritage fashion expert Nigel Cabourn. The "Mammut x Nigel Cabourn" capsule collection, launching online at cabourn.jp on October 16th 2025, is a heartfelt homage to the history of alpinism, particularly the 1969 ascent of the Eiger's North Face, known as "Japan Diretissima," a direct route led by pioneering Japanese mountaineer Michiko Imai.
At the heart of this collaboration is the story of Michiko Imai, who, at the tender age of 27, became the first woman to participate in the first ascent of Switzerland's most notorious mountain, the North Face of the Eiger. As the only female member of the six-person Japanese team, Imai not only served as the expedition's doctor, but also helped pioneer the new direct route, known as "Japan Diretissima," on one of the Alps' most challenging faces.
Her courage and determination in achieving this feat at a time when women in Europe needed their husbands' permission to work, has served as a beacon of inspiration for generations of mountaineers and women, and for this collection.

"I was very happy to hear that the collaboration between Nigel Cabourn and Mammut was inspired by the Japan Diretissima, which we climbed in 1969," said Imai, now 83. "I hope that many people will enjoy this collection, which uses new materials while retaining the atmosphere of that time, and that it will inspire more people to become interested in nature and mountain climbing."
This capsule collection, comprised of 12 unisex styles, is inspired by the clothing worn by the 1969 expedition and reimagined by Nigel Cabourn through his unique perspective on reinterpreting vintage expedition wear. The collection features authentic materials like Ventile cotton, Scottish wool, and Swiss military blanket fabric, known for their durability, warmth, and timelessness. These traditional materials are combined with modern technologies like Pertex Quantum lining and Dry Down to achieve a classic look while meeting the highest modern standards. The design process involved research into historic mountaineering apparel, including rare archives discovered in an attic in Sheffield, England. The result is a collection of premium products designed to perform to the demands of the mountain environment. This limited-edition collection, with a timeless retro-futuristic look, also makes a great everyday premium piece.

"This collaboration is not about nostalgia, but about celebrating the tenacity, innovation and international spirit of mountaineering," said Nigel Cabourn. "Michiko's story, and the achievements of the entire Japanese team, are a powerful reminder of what humans can achieve in the mountains."
The collection was photographed on the north face of the Eiger in April 2025. Featuring Japanese Mammut athletes Tatsuya Aoki (aka Timmy) and Yuka Kobayashi, as well as Nigel Cabourn and Michiko Imai, the shoot united generations in a passion for alpinism. The collection is aimed at a global community that respects the rich, multicultural history inherent in alpinism (mountaineering culture and spirit), and is designed to be worn both in the mountains and in the city. The "Mammut x Nigel Cabourn Collection" will be available in select stores and at the official Nigel Cabourn online store cabourn.jp from October 16, 2025.
A pre-order event will also be held at the Nigel Cabourn Tokyo Flagship Store from Thursday October 9th to Wednesday October 15th.

This vintage-inspired jacket features a unique asymmetrical closure based on vintage designs from that era, providing incredible warmth. The patch pocket on the chest and the embroidered MAMMUT GARANTIE logo create a timeless look, paying tribute to the rich history of mountaineering wear.
Mammut x Cabourn Direttissima Wool ML Sweater
Inspired by the first ascent of the Eiger via the direct Japanese route in 1969, this sweater is based on the sweaters worn by mountaineering pioneers. Crafted from the highly insulating wool favoured by climbers in the 1960s as a cold-weather outerwear material, it was knitted at a world-renowned factory in Scotland. The fully fashioned knit construction, jacquard mammoth print, and striped sleeves and hem evoke the atmosphere of the time, creating a sweater that incorporates a timeless design beloved as a part of mountaineering style.
