When World War II ended in 1945, military uniforms were no longer needed, and many items, including duffle coats, were released onto the market as surplus.
This caught the eye of young people.
They were cheap, after all, and just like the M-51, which was hugely popular among mods, military wear began as surplus and spread to the public as fashion wear.
