The zip-up vest is a familiar item for Nigel Cabourn.
This time, a model featuring "rag jacquard" has been released, making its first appearance in the collection.
「US NAVY / Deck Vest x Native Pattern Vest」
This product has two main roots.
The first is deck wear used by the US Navy in the 1940s.
Designed for warmth, protection, and identification on board, this vest features a canvas exterior and alpaca lining. It is highly popular among vintage clothing and military enthusiasts.
The second is a rug vest featuring geometric patterns worn by Native Americans.
Typical patterns include Navajo, Chimayo, and Great Plains.
This product features a Navajo pattern motif and a design inspired by the "Broad Arrow" emblazoned on British military uniforms, a mark of official supply.
The most notable feature of this product is the seamless blend of ethnic patterns and military wear.
「A unique touch that overturns the image of merino wool」
Because rag jacquard is knitted in a two-layer structure, it has a tougher, more rugged feel than regular jacquard knitting. However, while toughness is important, if it's not comfortable to wear, it can be stressful to wear.
So, in pursuit of comfort, we focused on merino wool, which has a luxurious and soft texture.
However, using regular merino wool would deviate from the designs Nigel Cabourn envisions, so we used coarse-sawn merino single yarn.
This creates a natural texture, fuzziness, and volume, creating a just-right ruggedness that matches the inherent comfort of merino and the design.
The lining is made from fine yarn, and by knitting a cotton warp weft with a wool double yarn, we achieve a cozy, enveloping feel.
「Blanket stitching that shows craftsmanship」
This "blanket stitch" has appeared several times.
This stitch cannot be produced by ordinary machines and requires a specialist sewing machine.
And as there are few specialised sewing machines for this step, it is common for it to be outsourced to a separate factory.
However, the factory that produces this product, which Nigel Cabourn trusts, manages all processes in one place.
According to Zuki, the MAINLINE chief designer, there is only one such factory in the entire country. Knowing this background somehow adds to the sense of excitement when wearing the garments. I guess that's just the masculine side of things.
「The texture of the fabric creates a three-dimensional effect」
This uses a technique called "chuya," in which the thread colours are reversed on the front and back.
This technique is also used for reversible items, and in the case of this product, a key feature is that you can feel the movement of the fabric when you catch a glimpse of the lining.
