- A-1 FLIGHT JACKET -

The A-1 (flight jacket) started its development in 1923 and was adopted in 1927 as the first summer flight jacket for the U.S. Army Air Corps. Because pilots must sit in a cramped cockpit, similar to a car, a waist-length, short, blouson-style jacket was necessary. This became the prototype for many flight jackets, including its successor, the M-2, developed in 1931, and the world-famous MA-1, making it a memorable piece that ushered in a new era. The name "A-1" refers to both the "A" designation, which was the first adopted model, and the "Type 1" prototype.
This time we will introduce a superb piece of clothing that is based on the design of the A-1 flight jacket from the 1930s and constructed to Nigel Cabourn's specifications.

As the product name "A-1 JACKET - BROWN CORE LEATHER" suggests, the material used is fully-tanned brown core horsehide.
Horsehide refers to the leather from the horse's torso. It is supple and lightweight, yet strong and durable, making it one of the most versatile leathers available.
For this product, a black pigment is spray-applied onto the horsehide.
Spray painting can be done by hand or machine, but this time we chose machine painting so that you can enjoy the aging of the brown core.
Hand painting can create uneven colour, but we have chosen not to use it as the aging process is less visible. It initially has a clean look, but the surface paint will wear away with wear, allowing you to enjoy the changes and growth that occur in its own way.
Tanning using 100% natural plant-derived tannins involves many steps and is time-consuming and costly, but the lustre that develops with use is a texture unique to this technique.
The evolution of leather products is one of the romantic pursuits of men, no matter how old they are.

The A-1 jacket of that time had an all-button front, but this product features a hook part at the neck.
The hook part is an iconic design used on various products this season, and is an important detail that gives a sense of both the seasonal craftsmanship and the eclectic style that is characteristic of Nigel Cabourn.
Only the hook parts used on the leather products are made in Germany, and perhaps because the country is home to many car and precision instrument manufacturers, their precision and durability are first-rate.
The fact that it is a special specification that sets it apart from other products is also appealing.

The four front buttons are MAIN LINE horn buttons, with palm buttons used for the front, reflecting the historical context of the time.
While different from the AUTHENTIC LINE horn buttons, these buttons have an outstanding sense of weight and style.
The buttons on both the front and back are made from natural materials, creating a part that allows you to feel the change in style.
Metal snap buttons are used on the top and bottom, which enhance the harmony with the hook parts.

The ribbing around the neck, sleeves, and hem is also exquisite.
It's made in Kiryu, Gunma Prefecture. If you're familiar with this just from hearing it, you're a serious Nigel Cabourn freak.
Kiryu is famous for its textile production, with the saying "Nishijin of the West, Kiryu of the East" suggesting it's an area that specialises in thread-based industries like knitting and embroidery.
The fact that they commissioned the work to artisans in Kiryu shows their commitment to this item, but they also use old-fashioned knitting machines, which are used to produce the garment.
The cylindrical knitting machine used for the sleeves is particularly old-fashioned, and is a rare machine that can only be used with meticulous maintenance and the absolute skill of the artisan.
As you put it on, you'll notice the soft feel of the ribbing and the beautiful two-tiered ribbing that sinks in underneath.

Bold action pleats are deployed on the back, from the shoulders to the waist.
A detail seen on vintage bomber jackets, the way the flight jackets are combined is exquisite.
The specifications of these action pleats could only be reproduced with the meticulous skill of our artisans. The range of motion and the impressive back style are enormous.
